Carlos is the youngest son of a Lebanese immigrant, Julian. With a net worth of around US$ 60 billion, Slim is the second richest in the world 2008. This man has made much money from the performance of America Movil, his wireless telephone company. His first fortune is when he bought fixed line operator Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) in 1990. He built Grupo Carso, an important Mexican financial-industrial empire.

As a philantropist, Slim has created the Fundación del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México in 2000. In 2007, his foundation has donated close to US$ 4 billion to fight the poorness in Latin America.
